The Athletics Louth Cross Country season got off to a winning start for Boyne A.C recently, with 5 first place finishes out of 10 in the recent Novice and Even age Cross Country Championships held in Darver. The novice ladies were first to test out the challenging course over 3,000m, with Catherine Tiernan-Bell taking an early lead, some strong running saw her maintain her first place position, to cross the finish line in 12.25, with a 20 second margin over 2nd place. Patricia Gaughran, Sandra McGuinness and Barbara Carr made their cross country debut in style and took 6th place ladies team. The mens race was contested over 6,000m, and once again Boyne A.C. dominated from the outset, with some superb front running from Oisin O’Gibne, tackling the course with his usual flair, he too finished with a 24 second lead, crossing the line in 20.01. James Bull crossed the line in 27th place in a time of 23.59, with Cathal O’Donnell a fraction behind in 28th place.
With the adults enjoying a well earned rest and coffee, the juveniles then stepped up to the mark , with the u10s getting things underway. Sholah Lawrence made light work of the 800m distance, finishing in 1st place, with clubmates Kate Culhane just behind in 2nd and Chloe Cooney in 4th, while newcomer Chloe Hanley finished in a fine 17th place, awarding the girls the 1st team prize for their efforts. The u10 boys took team bronze, with fine runs from Lorcan Forde Dunne to finish in 3rd place, his brother Tadgh took 7th, with Luca McLoughlin 13th, Rhys Clarke 17th, Callum Byrne 18th, Daniel Hanley 22nd and Fergus Nolan 24th. The u12 girls saw a super run from Emer Cooney to take 4th place over the tough 2,000m distance, Ella McLoughlin finished in a fine 15th place, with sisters Isabella Garcia, 9th and Allie in 29th. It was team gold again for the boys u12 team, a culmination of superb runs from Paddy Price who took individual gold, Shea O’Donnell, out of age taking silver and Amitesh Bala and Sean Cummins in 8th and 15th respectively. The u14 girls took on a gruelling 3,000ms, but it certainly didn’t deter the young ladies from Boyne AC as they took team gold and all but 1 of the top 7 spots. Anna Faulkner was 2nd overall, with Siofra Devine 3rd, Lily Cummins 4th, Caer NÌGhibne 5th, Eabha Cosgrove 6th and Meadhbh Nolan in 7th. It was another one/two for Boyne in the u14 boys race, with a strong run from Danny Nugent to take gold, followed closely by teammate Neil Culhane in 2nd, Cathal Monaghan finished in 9th place with Adam Byrne close behind in 14th, with the young men awarded the silver team medal. Tom Cummins was the sole representative from the club in the u16 boys race, where he ran superbly to take 3rd overall over the 4,000m distance, while Tadhg Everitt Thompson finished in a fine 6th in the u18 6,000m.
